LabVenture: Data can be collected in many ways, through taking measurements, or by reflecting on experiences. LabVenture! has students analyze their experiences to learn more about the questions they were asked and to draw conclusions.
This Activity: Students collected data at their study sites, and in science, the more data/trials the better. Students analyze their data to draw conclusions about the questions they asked.
Vital Signs:

Goal: To describe your study site using data that was collected during field visits.

Question: What are different features (location, temperature...) of your study site?


For Example:

What is the longitude and latitude?

  • Have each team share the long/lat reading that they collected at the study site.
  • Students map the long/lat readings on Google Earth or find the locations on a map with long and lat.
  • Question: Why do the readings differ?
  • As a class, choose a long/lat reading that best describes your site.

What is the water temperature?
  • Have each team/student share the water temperature reading that they measured at the study site (if temperature was taken at different locations - surface, depth, upriver, downriver - make sure you seperate the readings to reflect each location).
  • Have each team/student graph the temperatures for each location and then find the average temperatures.
  • Question: Why do the temperatures readings at the same location differ?
  • Question: Do the temperatures differ between locations? If so, why?

How does the site change between seasons?
  • Assign each team a different field visit that was done throughout the year. Students will work with their teams to describe what was unique about the field site during that visit using the data that was collected (observations, temperatures, photographs).
  • Each team will present their findings to the class.
  • Mix up the teams so that one student representing each field visit is in every team.
  • Have students compare their findings and discuss how the site changed throughout the year.
