LabVenture: Students are given specific questions to investigate during their LabVenture! experience, but they are also asked to come up with some of their own. This is what scientists do, form questions based on their observations.
This Activity: This activity has students looking at the observations they made about their study site, and forming questions that they may have about it. Students then have to select some questions to focus on and answer through the next step of the scientific method, Investigate.
Vital Signs:

Goal: To come up with questions that can be answered through investigating the study site.

Question: What can you learn from your study site?


Now that you've visited and made detailed observations of your study site, what do you think we can learn from it: What questions can we ask about this study site to understand it better?

Brainstorm questions as a class.

Some examples:
What is the longitude and latitude?
What is the water temperature?
What types of trees/plants grow at the site?
What animals can you find at the site?
How does the site change between seasons?

Once you have compiled a list of all the questions your class can think of, revisit the list with another question: How can we answer/find answers to these questions? What information would we need?

Some of the questions you may not be able to answer - That's Okay! There are many unanswered questions in science!

Select a few questions to answer as a class about your study site during your second Field Visit.
  • Form Hypothesis for the questions your class will focus on. Students can do this individually or in teams - it is okay to have multiple hypothesis.

Document all Brainstormed Questions - Ideas about how to answer the questions - and highlight the questions your students will focus on. Include student hypothesis in this document.
